batik tulips

batik tulips

This is my favourite of the applique (fast fused in this case) tulip panels that I did.

machine quilting

It was probably the first time that I began to break loose and get excited about the possibilities.

I did think that this was going to be the last blast from the past inspired by tulips, but as I write this I have remembered another tulip piece that I will go hunting for and show you next time.

Lilac Tulips

hand applique

Lilac tulips!
Not sure if you can get a lilac tulip but here they are. One of my few attempts at needle turned applique to accompany the one done in my earlier post.

Oh, how little I knew!

That bulk where all the stems cross is shocking :D
I will admit to adding those patches of machine stitch was because I was totally fed up with the hand stitching and wanted to quickly fill up the space.

However, I will not admit to adding the couched thread as a means hiding some badly matched points ;D

Let's talk Tulips

applique tulips

This is a panel that I did some years ago to demonstrate one of the many applique techniques out there.

Did you used to put blanket stitch around everything? It used to be very popular.

This was made at a time when I didn't have the time or inclination to do hand stitching (how times and tastes have changed) and was done with an automatic machine blanket stitch.
You might be thinking that these are not my usual colours but I do quite like this vintage country charm, as demonstrated by this quilt that I made back in 2011.

Back to tulips. I like tulips. I like them a lot and I will be sharing more so stay tuned!

Hexi block (kinda!)

quilt block

Like my Hexi Block?
Want to know how I did it?
I painted it of course, but then you already knew that didn't you :D

quilt block

The back view shows how I stitched around each shape. Added some embroidery...

...and flipped the edges of the backing to the front to do the binding.

One day I am going to a hexagon quilt the correct way. Maybe like this one.

**This is part of my own personal challenge to create and learn a bit more about traditional quilt blocks while adding my own twist, as described here. I am following the free Block of the Month classes on Craftsy as my guide.
